Plitvice Lakes, Croatia's oldest and largest national park, represents a unique natural phenomenon of international importance. Located in the mountainous area of Lika, the park encompasses 16 terraced lakes that are interconnected by numerous waterfalls and cascades, creating an incredible mosaic of blue and green colors.

The park has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979 due to its exceptional beauty and unique geological processes. The travertine barriers that create lakes and waterfalls are formed by the action of special bacteria and algae, a process that continues to this day, making the park a living and changing ecosystem.

The park's total area is 296.85 km², of which lakes occupy about 2 km². The highest waterfall, the Great Waterfall, has an impressive height of 78 meters. The park is recognizable by its network of wooden bridges and walkways that lead visitors along and over the lakes, providing spectacular views of each cascade.

The park's flora and fauna are extremely rich with over 1,400 plant species, many of which are endemic. The park is home to the known population of bears, wolves, lynxes and numerous bird species. Each season brings a different experience - from lush spring, green summer, colorful autumn to enchanting winter when waterfalls freeze into ice sculptures.
