Plitvice Lakes, the oldest and largest national park in Croatia, represent a unique natural phenomenon of international significance. Located in the mountainous region of Lika, the park encompasses 16 terraced lakes interconnected by numerous waterfalls and cascades, creating an incredible mosaic of blue and green colors.

The park was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1979 due to its exceptional beauty and unique geological processes. The travertine barriers that create the lakes and waterfalls are formed by the action of special bacteria and algae, a process that continues today, making the park a living and changing ecosystem.

The total park area is 296.85 km², of which lakes cover about 2 km². The highest waterfall, Veliki slap (Great Waterfall), is an impressive 78 meters high. The park is recognizable for its network of wooden bridges and walkways that lead visitors along and across the lakes, providing spectacular views of each cascade.

The flora and fauna of the park are exceptionally rich with over 1,400 plant species, many of which are endemic. The park is home to a known population of bears, wolves, lynxes, and numerous bird species. Each season brings a different experience - from lush spring, through green summer, colorful autumn to magical winter when waterfalls freeze into ice sculptures.
